The workshop aims to bring together formal and computational linguistics working on modelling conversation and the cognitive states of interlocutors with neurolinguists, researchers on memory, and researchers on emotion. There has been much progress recently in modelling how meaning emerges in spontaneous conversation, but analyzing phenomena like laughter and forgetting indicates that current theories need to interface closely with fine grained theories of working memory, long-term memory, and emotion. In a broader perspective, this is obviously also a condition on making such work more amenable to neural modelling. Conversely, we think that broadening the empirical reach of both existing theories of WM and LTM and emotion from tightly controlled lab studies to spontaneous conversation is an important challenge.
